Hey kids! This is my last post over here, I'm just updating to let you know that my first post at lemont_art is up and that that this journal if officially closed, so you can defriend it if you wish and go friend the new comm, or if you want you can friend my personal journal instead: almost_october (no icons there, though). :) I'm not gonna 'ban set' anyone because I really don't care that much, just letting you know won't be hearing from me from this venue anymore.

At any rate, the new post consists of:

This is an "I'm moving!" post. While this may not be the way I want to be moving (to another city) I have, however, decided to move this journal to it's own brand spankin' new community. All my current posts will obviously stay here, and I've already added them as memories at the comm. Some reasons why I decided to do this:

1) I'm flighty.

2) I realized this isn't really the right venue for posting my graphic whatsits, as this isn't a personal journal, and I don't read the journals of those who friend me (unless of course you're over at my actualy personal journal). I think it'll work out better with a comm rather than a journal.

3) I won't have to log in and out of journals anymore! As I am rather lazy, this a bonus I'm looking forward to. :p

Sooooo, that's it! I'll be slowly defriending on this end, so obviously don't be offended since it's basically going to be a dead journal anyhow. And of course for those who want to know, the new name is lemont_art. It's a closed comm, therefore I'm the only one with posting access, so all you have to do if you want to watch it is add it as a friend, and be on the look out for new stuff v. soon!

Also, one more quick note to those of you who are affiliated with this journal, I've added you as affiliates over there as well. Let me know if this is cool. :)

icon tutorial #1 - G/S; brightening up dark images

Hey all, I decided to throw together a wee tutorial that's the basis for pretty much all the icons in my last two posts.* Now, each one varies slightly depending on the colouring of the base image, so don't expect this to work with everything, but it should give you the gist of it. And now you get an example of how goddamn futzy I am! Heh.

Done in PS7, but I'm sure it's somewhat translateable.

So we'll be going from this: to this:

Step 1: Start with your base:
duplicate three times and set all duplicated layers to screen
duplicate your base once more, drag that layer to the top and set to softlight at 20% opacity

Step 2: Between the second and third screened layers, create a new fill layer with #011537 and set to exclusion at 100% opacity. Then, above the softlight layer create another fill layer with #A4DDF4 and set to colour burn at 35% opacity.

Step 3: create and new curves adjustment layer (layer > new adjustment layer > curves)
Play around with these as you see fit for your image. And remember, you can always change the opacity of the layer you create. For this icon I used:
RGB: input: 121, output: 135
Red: input: 121, output: 137
Blue: input: 130, output: 124

Step 4: create another new fill layer and with #E8F3F4 and set to overlay at 13% opacity
create one more fill layer with #F3EEE8 and set to multiply at 100% opacity (depending on the image, you can duplicate this layer to get the colouring you want).
I know this doesn't look that different, but the reason I like putting in these different colour layers is because it gives you the ability to tweak and adjust the colouring to exactly how you want it by varying the opacities of the different layers.

Step 5: take this texture from washwhendirty and create two new layers with it. Set the first layer to softlight at 70% opacity, and flip the second layer vertically and set to mulitply at 40% opacity. Add a scratchy texture from peoplemachines and set to screen and you have your finished product!

I hope this was a little bit helpful! You don't have to credit me or anything, and you can let me know what you come up with if you want. :)

gsr is canon, yo + some randomness

In anticipation of the new ~~GSR IS CANON~~ season of "CSI" I made a tonne of GSR icons, as well as some Sara. I've been playing around a lot with tutorials, and I really like how the GSR icons turned out. I wasn't too sure about the Sara ones, but I really like how bright the blues are, so they stayed. :)

AND, because I believe ink_cat suggested more quote icons, and I've been watching a lot of "Mythbusters" lately you get, that's right, "Mythbusters" quote icons! REJOICE MY MINIONS! Oh, and there's also a smattering of Pon & Zi info banners, just for kicks. At any rate, here you are ~~and OMG GSR IS CANON~~. :)

Well, I finally did it. While there's still (at least) one more season to go, I've finished Sara Through the Seasons thus far. I went all over the place with style on this one so I ended up with a lot that were outside my comfort zone by using a lot of different tutorials depending on what I felt would work. Pretty little square-headed babies they be. ;p

Also! tutorial #2 - Greg banner

Here is another tutorial by request of unspell. :) Today we'll be making this (which can be found in this post):

1. First we start out with a blank 600x350 canvas, put a medium sized border around it and pick your images! I'm not going to go into much detail at this point because I encourage you to use different styles and make it your own. :) If you're looking for a jumping off point you take a boo in in my memories here.

To round off the corners of the images, use this tutorial by prehistoric.

2. Next we put an edge around the group of images to make it cohesive. To do this pick your rounded rectangle shape tool and make the shape under the layers with the images, making it big enough to create a border. Make sure you've got the 'shape layers' selected at the top of your page:

Next I chose some fun masking/textured brushes from dearest (I'm not sure which, just go peruse a bit, I'm sure you'll find something!) as well as one of the 600x600 scribble textures from the same, and position them however you want. :) Now we've got this:

3. The text is pretty simple (I used the Century Gothic font). I chose lyrics from the song "I Am A Scientist" by the Dandy Warhols, because *duh*. ;) To roate the text in its own layer go to edit > transform > rotate and flip it around however you want.

To delete the part of the text along the edge of the main image, select your eraser tool. When you click on the text layer you'll get this message:

Click 'ok' and delete the part of the text you want, leaving a few pixels of space between it and the border.

Now simply add some extra textures, like tiny text from colorfilter and fun graphic-y brushes from sheld0n and you're set!

Hey ho! Today's post is a little different than usual, as in: no icons! But there are 4 wallpapers plus a foray in the land of resources. I wasn't finding the right sized tiny text brushes to use in my wallpapers (though colorfilter has some good ones if you're looking) so I tracked down a tutorial and made my own! And now I'm sharing. There are also two packs of cloud textures, one simply clouds the other sunsets. This is my first attempt at these so lemme know if they're at all useful to you.

** just a quick note here: I'm not generally too hardcore about people crediting my icons and the like (though no one will ever tell you isn't appreciated) but since the cloud textures are all photos that I took myself, I'm going to be much more emphatic about encouraging crediting (in userinfo or a resources post) because they are in fact (c) lil' ole me, and not just me prettifying something else that is in and of itself copywrited. Pls? Thnx. :)

BIG HUGE CSI POST THIS BE. Funny CSI and pretty Jorja Fox, icons and banners and wallpapers, oh my! Two of the wallpapers are similiar to the Nick/Cath wallpaper in this post (by suggestion of cynnabug) :) and then I went on an experimenting rampage which included learning how to make torn paper in Photoshop, and ended up making one of my favourite things I've ever made. *hops from one foot to the other with glee* Oh, and did I mention all the gorgeous Jorja icons? ;)

I should also mention a couple of the icons are sort of...R rated? But hilariously R rated. Stick figure pr0n! Heh. Heh. Allll riiiiiiight. ;)

HeyHEY to ya'll! It seems that I've finally managed to do a wallpaper and a banner that funsized and knewab0y requested like, a bajillion years ago (sorry it took so long!).

I also finally made a bunch of "Firefly" icons from the first episode "Serenity" (more episdoes will come in time), "Futurama" quote icons from the episodes "Bendin' in the Wind" and "Roswell That Ends Well", as well as a smattering of "CSI" icons I made while playing around with a wee new tutorial I found. :) Shiny!

grissom/sara banner tutorial

Okay, so unspell requested a tutorial for this banner (or something like it) a while ago, so that is what I did. And I made a new one because I didn't save the first as a .psd, and damned if I can remember the specifics of the stuff I make. :p

SO, follow the cut to learn how to make this banner (I also snuck in a quick saturation correction and sharpening tutorial):

1. Create a new file, setting the size @ 600x350 pixels, and create a new black fill layer. Pick whatever images you want to use, resize them and all that jazz, and fiddle around until you get an idea of what you want the layout to look like.

2. Now here's where you own creativity comes in. As you can see above, every image is a little different colour-wise, so any one tutorial isn't going to work for all of them. This is fine for me because I'm a fiddler, but I know this can be annoying so I'll give you a couple of hints.

First of all, take each image and play with it in its own file, then paste it back into the main file when you're happy with it.

a) a basic fix to neutralize images that are heavily colour-saturated (ie: really blue, really yellow, etc.): go to 'colour balance' (image > adjustments > colour balance) and do this:

blue: up the red and yellow
yellow/orange: up the cyan and blue
green: up the red and blue

b) for brightening the image, duplicate the base twice, set the first to screen and the second to soft light, then play with the opacities (and you can do this more than once if you need/want to). For these I also did a white layer set to 'overlay', and a light pink/lavender layer set to 'colour burn' (among other things), then lowered the opacities and fiddled until they looked good. But as I said, this is really all up to you. :)

c) here's my quick little sharpening tutorial: duplicate your image, select the bottom layer, go to filter > sharpen > sharpen edges, and sharpen edges twice. Reduce the opacity of the top layer to between 70 and 75%. Now, I usually like to do a bit of selective sharpening (ie: eyes and lips) so select a round brush at a small pixel size, select your sharpening tool, set the strength at 10% and go over the areas you want to sharpen. Voilá!

Now that you've done that, follow prehistoric's tutorial for rounding the edges of an image (make sure all visible layers are merged), then 'select all' and copy/paste it back into your banner file. As you can see I made the middle image black and white, which is something else you can play around with. :)

So now you've got this:

3. Now for the fun (and comparatively easy) part. :D Brushes!

I like to use brushes under the image to give some contrast against a solid background, and the flowery brushes just look pretty. The main blob/mask brush in the center is from ewanism and the flower brushes are from scarsonchest.

Now take your rounded rectangle tool, pick a few colours and make some little squares wherever you want.

Now you've got this.

4.Text time! The lyrics I used are from the song "Dance Me to the End of Love" by Leonard Cohen, for those who want to know. The fonts I used are Bookman Oldstyle and AL Afternoon Delight. With the Bookman, I like to space out the letters when I'm doing banners and wallpapers so that way you can actually see what it says and it doesn't looked so squished and clumpy.

5. Now, you can't really see the text that well against the background, so go back to your rounded rectangle tool, pick a light/medium colour and draw rectangles under the text. Set them to multiply. This accomplishes two things: a) it allows you to see the text better, and b) it also gives a little added interest and texture to the whole thing. :)

6. I do like my tiny text brushes so add a few of those by colorfilter, and whatever else you want (butterflies, wee!) and you're done!

Hey my lovlies! Holy crap I know it's been close to 2 months since I've posted any Sara Through the Seasons, but I wanted to take a break before coming back to it (also I got distracted by finale stuffs :D) and your patience shall be rewarded justly. There are lots of extras in this go around due to season 5 being full of Sara gorgeousness and screentime and character exposition, and the spectacularly high quality caps @ purejorja.net just called out to me.

clone high mood theme!

No icons today my pretties (WTF?!). Insead I come bearing a mood theme for LiveJournal! :D (OMG!)

I've been working on this for AGES because I would get annoyed at it and shove into a metaphorical corner. And then I got the DVDs which are like, a bajillion times better quality than the ripped downloads that I had so I got all inspired to finish it. And then I did! Amazing. Also, YAYZ for me for figuring out more CSS code. :p

Also, I should note that you don't have to have a paid account to use a custom mood theme. You can get a sponsored account and be able to have one as well, you just have to put up with a few ads and the like. :)

Full Preview

Installation:

1. Download the file above, and please upload the images to your own server. I use photobucket.com and it has served me quite well. :)

2. In your downloaded file there should be a file called "copypaste_mood theme.txt". Open that sucker up.

3. Now, the fidgety part. In each line where it says http://yourserver.com/blah, going in alphabetical order, replace it with the URL of wherever you uploaded the images to. You should end up with something that looks like this:

moodtheme_setpic 172251 90 http://yourserver.com/accomplished 80 60

I've written everything up so that in the copypaste file, all you have to do is input the six digit code that the admin_console generates for you (the 172251) and your link to the corresponding image. Everything else stays the same! :)

4. Now, go to LJ's Admin Console and enter the following:

moodtheme_create "almost_october's clone high mood theme" "clone high mood theme"

5. First of all, remember to keep this window open (you'll see why in a second)! With that in mind, click 'execute' and you will be given the six digit code I mentioned above. Copy down the code # and go back to the "copypaste_mood theme.txt" file. Replace the six digit number in that file with the one that you've been given. If you have everything open in Microsoft Word, the 'edit' > 'find' > 'replace' option is very handy here. :)

6. Now that you've done all that, copy everything, and if you're in Notepad make sure that 'word wrap' is turned off.

7. Go back to your Admin Console and paste everything into the box that's there. Click 'execute'.

8. NOW, go to modify journal and under the pull-down menu for 'mood icons' select "almost_october's clone high mood theme". Then 'save changes' and you're all set!

LJ also has a FAQ page for custom mood themes that explains things in more detail, so if you have any more questions then you can poke your head over there. :)

* And because I'm nice (though I'm sure most who come here already have it) I uploaded the full Clone High theme song by The Abandoned Pools. :D

Mmmmmm, procrastination. I are 73h W1NN4r! ZOMG!

Just throwing this up here before I head home for the weekend. SO, here is Sara Through the Seasons: Season 3! And a bunch of quote icons (see below). :) I'm pretty happy with these, though more so with the second half. The lighting for a lot of this season was annoying and dark, and thus a bit of a pain to work with. It's also funny how by looking through all the caps I notice how much casual touch there used to be between Grissom and Sara (expecially season 2) and just interaction in general. :p I've also noticed Sara's jewellery, most of which I rather want. She always has pretty necklaces. Hee. OKAY THEN, onward!

SO, as you can see I've kind of exploded with icons. :p What happened here was that I decided to set a challenge for myself and so decided to take a page from the book of the likes of sobran and solamentenic and do a "through the seasons" type deal. Since Grissom and "CSI" in general are already being done, I chose Sara! :D

And thus, I present you with 66 icons, 3 per every episode from season 1. There are a few Grissom/Sara-esque ones because, well, you can't have Sara without Grissom. :p

photoshop is my friend...CSI icons and banners

Just a small update right now. I'm mostly just glad to be back at my computer with my Photoshop after the holiday break. :D So here are 2 Sara icons and 2 "CSI" banners (I heart them so). :)
